The Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) started in 1829, during the period of enslavement. Since then, both Baltimore City and the State of Maryland have operated an a racially exclusionary and underfunded system for Black children.
If Maryland and Baltimore City are to foster racial equity, people must confront this history and learn from the mistakes of the past. Black schools, Black teachers, and Black students matter!
